In the Spring term of 2010, our topic work was based on the theme of 'The Nutcracker'. We started the topic off by visiting the Upfront Gallery before Christmas to watch a puppet show performance of 'Aladdin'. After the show, we stayed behind to speak to John Parkinson and learn some of his tricks of the trade.
Throughout the Spring term, the children worked hard - we went to Newcastle's Theatre Royal to watch a ballet version of 'The Nutcracker' and, after reading several versions of the story, wrote our own versions as a playscript. The children then worked in groups to make props, puppets, costumes and the set. John Parkinson then came to visit us as a consultant, giving each group lots of valuable advice.
We were very lucky to have a parent of an ex-pupil of the school who was willing to help us build our very own puppet theatre. The set design group went down to the workshop of John Stynes design in Brampton to see it being designed on a computer and then made.
Eventually, all our efforts came together at the start of the summer term. We performed the play in the local village hall to a full house of parents and people from the local community. It was a great way to finish a very exciting and creative topic.
