English at Lanercost

At Lanercost Primary School, English is a key part of a broad and balanced curriculum. We aim for all children to become confident readers and writers, able to use Standard English effectively for a range of purposes and audiences, preparing them well for secondary education and beyond.

Writing is taught through CUSP - an engaging, progressive curriculum- that develops knowledge of different text types, spelling, grammar and editing skills. Children write within an immersive learning environment, allowing them to write with clear purpose and understanding.

Reading is central to learning and enjoyment. Daily phonics teaching in the early years and KS1, alongside high-quality texts across the curriculum, support children in becoming fluent, confident readers. A strong emphasis on reading for pleasure, both at school and at home, helps children develop a lifelong love of books and the skills to read independently and confidently.
