Attendance Matters!
Coming to School Everyday is Important
Regular and punctual attendance at school is essential to ensure children can access the full curriculum and make good progress. The minimum acceptable level of attendance at our school is 96%.
We are committed to promoting good attendance and believe that the early identification of concerns, alongside working in partnership with parents and carers, is key to supporting children and preventing patterns of poor attendance from becoming established.
The procedures below outline the steps the school will take to support and improve attendance where concerns are identified.
Notice to Improve Letter: This letter is issued to inform parents and carers that a child’s attendance is beginning to decline. It will be sent when attendance falls below 96% and serves as an early intervention to encourage improvement.
Medical Evidence Request Letter: Where absence levels cause concern, parents and carers may be asked to provide medical evidence to support future absences. Without appropriate evidence, absences may be recorded as unauthorised. Medical evidence may include an appointment card or confirmation of prescribed medication.
Parent Meeting: Parents and carers may be invited to attend a formal attendance meeting with school staff to discuss concerns, agree actions, and set clear targets to improve attendance.
Where a child’s attendance falls to 90% or below, this is defined by the Government as persistent absence. If attendance remains below this level and unauthorised absences are recorded, the school must refer to the Local Authority School Improvement Officer. Further intervention and enforcement action may be taken in line with statutory guidance.
