Our Mental Health and Wellbeing
At Lanercost C of E School, we are committed to nurturing positive mental health and emotional wellbeing for every child and adult in our community. Rooted in our Christian vision to live life in all its fullness, we believe that each person is created with inherent worth and dignity. Flourishing includes not only academic growth, but also emotional strength, resilience and a secure sense of belonging.
The World Health Organisation defines mental health as a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises their potential, copes with the normal stresses of life, works productively and fruitfully, and is able to contribute to their community. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological and social wellbeing. It influences how we think, feel and act, and shapes how we handle stress, relate to others and make choices.
We recognise that positive mental health is just as important as physical health. Like physical health, mental wellbeing exists on a spectrum and can fluctuate over time. Our school culture promotes openness, compassion and courage, encouraging children to speak honestly about their feelings and to seek support when needed. Through our curriculum, pastoral care and daily interactions, we intentionally develop resilience, empathy and self awareness.
Mental health and wellbeing are prioritised within our safeguarding provision. We have a designated member of staff who leads on mental health and wellbeing across the school, ensuring coordinated support and early intervention where needed. In addition, a named governor oversees mental health provision, providing strategic challenge and accountability. This shared leadership ensures that wellbeing remains central to our school
