A School Where Everyone Belongs
At Lanercost C of E Primary School, we believe every child is created in the image of God and deserves to feel valued, safe and respected. Our Christian vision shapes a culture where diversity is celebrated and every member of our school community is encouraged to flourish.
Research shows that when children feel seen, understood and safe, they are more likely to engage, learn and thrive. We work intentionally to build strong relationships, shared routines and a supportive environment so that every child feels that this is their school and that they belong here.
Our inclusive approach is not about treating everyone the same. It is about recognising difference, removing barriers and ensuring that every child can participate fully in school life.
No Outsiders at Lanercost
We believe deeply that there are no outsiders at Lanercost C of E Primary School. Through our curriculum, our behaviour approach and our daily interactions, we help children understand that everyone is welcome and that difference is something to respect and celebrate.
Stories, discussion and reflection help children explore themes such as identity, friendship, fairness and respect. Children learn that each person has value and that our community is stronger because of the differences within it. This supports them to develop empathy, kindness and the confidence to stand up for others.
This approach helps children understand that inclusion is not just about rules but about attitudes, choices and relationships.
Learning About the Wider World
We help children understand diversity by connecting their learning to the wider world. Through resources such as Picture News, children regularly explore current events and global stories. This helps them learn about different cultures, beliefs, communities and experiences.
These discussions encourage children to think critically, ask questions and consider how people’s lives may be different from their own. They also learn how values such as justice, compassion and responsibility apply in real world situations.
By exploring the wider world in this way, children develop respect, curiosity and a growing understanding of their role as global citizens.
Equality, Protected Characteristics and Respect
We are committed to promoting equality and helping children understand the importance of dignity and respect for all. Children learn about protected characteristics such as race, religion, disability, gender and family background in ways that are age appropriate and thoughtful.
This learning helps children recognise unfairness, challenge stereotypes and treat others with care. It also supports them to understand their rights and responsibilities as members of a diverse society.
By embedding this understanding across our curriculum, relationships and daily life, we aim to create a community where everyone is valued and where children learn how to build a fair and compassionate world.
