What do we mean by spiritual development?

At Lanercost C of E Primary School, we believe spiritual development is about helping children to understand themselves, others and the world around them in deeper and more meaningful ways. It is not limited to religion. It is about curiosity, reflection, awe, questions and values. We want children to notice the beauty of the world, to think about big ideas, to develop empathy and to reflect on what gives life meaning and purpose.

Spiritual development runs through every part of school life. It is not a single lesson or event. It is something we deliberately nurture through our curriculum, our worship, our relationships and the way we live together as a community.

Windows, Mirrors and Doors

We use the language of Windows, Mirrors and Doors to help adults plan opportunities for spiritual growth across the curriculum. Windows allow children to look out and encounter new ideas, experiences and perspectives. Mirrors give children time to reflect on their own thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Doors encourage children to respond, act and make choices that shape who they are becoming.

With the children, we use simpler language so that spiritual reflection feels natural and accessible. We encourage them to think in three ways: I think, I wonder, I will. This helps children to notice, question and respond to the world around them, and to consider how their learning influences the choices they make.

How spiritual development happens in our school

Spiritual development is woven through our daily life. It happens in collective worship, in RE lessons, in classroom discussions and in the moments of stillness and reflection we create during the day. Children are encouraged to ask questions, explore different viewpoints and express their own thoughts respectfully.

Our close links with Lanercost Priory and St Mary Magdalene Church enrich this work. Worship in the Priory, visits from Rev Ben and opportunities to reflect in a sacred space all help children to experience spirituality as something real and lived rather than simply taught.

What we hope children gain

As children grow through our school, we want them to develop a strong sense of identity and belonging. We want them to recognise that they are unique and valued, and that their actions affect others and the wider world. Spiritual development helps children grow in compassion, resilience and hope.

We aim for our children to leave Lanercost not only with knowledge and skills, but with a deeper awareness of themselves, a respect for others and an openness to life’s big questions. This is part of how we support every child to flourish and live life in all its fullness.
