Moving on...

At Lanercost C of E School, we recognise that transition is an important stage in every child’s journey. Rooted in our Christian vision to live life in all its fullness, we ensure that all children are carefully supported as they move on to the next stage of their education.

In Year 6, particular attention is given to preparing children for the academic, social and emotional changes that accompany secondary school. We understand that this is an exciting yet sometimes daunting step. Throughout the year, children take part in collaborative activities with other local schools, including maths workshops, sporting events and residential experiences. These opportunities allow children to meet future friends and build confidence in a safe and welcoming environment.

From Year 5 onwards, we actively encourage children and families to explore prospective secondary schools. We share information, promote open days and transition events, facilitate meetings with new staff where possible and provide time in school for children to explore transition materials and school websites.

Each child completes a transition project to share with their new teachers in September. This may take the form of an All About Me profile, a written task or a presentation. In some cases, we work in partnership with the receiving school so that children receive input from both Lanercost staff and their future teachers.

Children are also given opportunities to discuss worries, ask questions and reflect on the move ahead. Assemblies and supportive conversations with trusted adults help to ensure children feel reassured and prepared.

In addition, staff hold detailed professional conversations with each secondary school to ensure
